WINTER REALLY SUCKS

Current newsletter - September 2006

Hello everyone.  I know it’s been quiet from this side of camp…oh…all year.  Things have been pretty busy personally as I’m sure everyone else has been as well.

First let me say thank you again to everyone who came out and supported the BBQ in July, especially our sponsors who donated prizes for give-a-ways and the raffle.  Aside from some local enforcement issues it turned out great.  We’ll take what we learned and your comments and make next year’s even better.

Below is a chart showing traffic on a month to month basis.  Needless to say July was a particularly busy month, no doubt fueled by the then upcoming BBQ.

While it has tapered off some, we have had over 4200 hits to the main site and now have 173 members!  I know there are still plenty more rotaries floating around out there.  If you haven’t done so already, print this out and throw it under someone’s windshield if you don’t recognize them as an RC3 member.

T-SHIRTS and STICKERS

Thanks to Andrew Chan over from the JGTCA camp, we’ve received our new logo which some of you may have seen on the directional arrows at the BBQ.  While not QUITE finished, this is the gist of what will be used on forthcoming t-shirts and stickers.

Somewhere in or around that will have RC3 or Rotary Car Club of Chicago or perhaps both depending on what it’s printed on.  That’s all TBD.  Merciless has offered up a contact for the shirts and I’m sure will have some info for the stickers as well.  As soon as a proper font if determined, they’ll be fired up.  With the coming cold months, the first batches may be hoodies or other long sleeve duds.  All proceeds of course will go to the club for either site maintenance or upgrades or in the club kitty for future events.

I’ve made several posts on other regional club sites asking about the possibility of enlisting some help for a large gathering next year similar to, or perhaps an ambitious replacement for Rotary Revolution.  The thread as posted follows:

“So I've been floating the idea of pooling resources and perhaps doing something ourselves. My understanding is there's to be no effort from our previous organizers. I do commend them for the efforts that they put forth in the years past, but unfortunately due to bad weather and other issues, I think it cast a poor light on the event and ended up causing them some unfortunate problems.

That said, I don't even know where to begin. I definitely like the venue as it provided us with a strip, road course and room for autocross courses. Personally, I'm a road course kinda guy with a little flair for the strip, but setting up an event of this magnitude is WAY over my head.

So, if there are interested parties that are willing to put some time and effort as well as securing some funds from local clubs, then I think that we can put something together ourselves. But if we're to secure that date, we need to do it very quickly if it's not too late already.

I'm mainly interested in hearing from club presidents/owners/etc, especially Northstar, Mi, Indy and St. Louis. Others are encouraged since I know there were some East Coast folks that have attended. Any West Coasters who organize Sevenstock please chime in to lend some experience.”

Where this leads, I can’t say.  Everyone knows that next two years are pretty big deals with 7/7/07 and 8/8/08.  There have been some rumblings about it, but no one’s come forward with anything and time is running out if not already.  We are large enough to come up with something big, but with the experience that others have had, especially some of the Northstar Rotary folks, I think that there could be a suitable replacement.  Of course, I don’t expect something huge like Sevenstock in the course of a year, but something representative of who was at the last Rev in ’05 would be a good start.  Hell, Sevenstock started with only a few buddies hanging out.

MEETS

As the Summer winds down, (Friday is Fall L) meets wind down too.  There are a couple of end of season meets planned at the moment, the first of which is on Thursday Sep 28th as described.  There is talk about the second one being on a weekend, but a date is TDB.  Let’s hope that the meets don’t end with the good weather.  CIR is a good place to go get your speed fix to hold you over if you’re so inclined.

So, I think that’s it for this edition.  I’m going to continue to play with the formatting to find something that works permanently.  Perhaps I’ll even create a properly formatted newsletter one of these days.

HAPPY ROTORING!
